Waukesha, WI – Kalmbach Publishing Co. has announced the appointment of Stephen C. George to the position of Vice President-Content, overseeing all editorial and art operations for the company. He succeeds Kevin P. Keefe, who will retire in March after 28 years with the company.

George, a veteran editor of magazines, books and digital content, joined Kalmbach in 2012 as Editor-in-Chief of Discover magazine, after the company moved the science title’s editorial offices from New York City to Waukesha, Wis.

“In his three years at Kalmbach, Steve has done an excellent job leading Discover,” said Kalmbach president, Chuck Croft. “He has led the repositioning of the brand in the market and refocused its editorial content, improving its performance and reader-satisfaction levels.” Croft noted that George has also served as editorial director in the successful launch of Kalmbach’s new title, Drone360.

George’s previous experience includes senior positions at media companies such as Rodale, Meredith, and Reader’s Digest Association (now Trusted Media Brands). Immediately before coming to Kalmbach, he was an executive editor at RDA, overseeing the development of a number of print and digital products.

Earlier in his career, George worked for a wide variety of trade and consumer publishers, covering topics as diverse as science, technology, travel, home improvement, collectibles and much more. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

“I'm delighted to see Steve step into this all-important position,” said Keefe. “His experience across a wide range of magazine brands has prepared him to meet the dynamic challenges of our business.”

Kalmbach Publishing Co., based in suburban Milwaukee, publishes 12 special-interest magazines – including Astronomy, Trains, Model Railroader, Bead & Button and related books –and produces websites and events based on those content areas.
